I have been working in the ACT for the past 6 months and have had several ‘discussions’ with the NDIS regarding funding young people for out of home supported accommodation – It is currently the NDIS position that they are not responsible for funding out of home supports for young people under the age of 18; there are currently several young men and women who are at risk of either becoming homeless or being admitted into RAC because of this. The NDIS stands by the point that it is the States and Territories who are responsible and not them. Unfortunately there are no departments that exist now in the A.C.T that can assist as they closed down when the NDIS was introduced here!!

On the NDIS website they have a disclaimer – If the community services system is responsible for a support, the Scheme cannot fund that support, even if community services system does not provide it. ( https://www.ndis.gov.au/families-carers/family-supports.html) Our conversations with planners have not been fruitful as they constantly refer back to this .

This is a crisis and nothing is being done about it .. or if there is.. it is being done slowly and with now transparency.

    Mark
