The Summer Foundation’s housing demonstration projects provide concrete examples of alternatives for young people living in aged care.
We have two demonstration projects that showcase best practice design to challenge thinking around housing for people with disability. Our projects are peppered throughout larger mainstream residential developments, connecting people to their community. Clever communications and smart home technology ensure that residents can enjoy their independence and privacy, while still having access to 24-hour on-call support.
Each apartment is a real-world example of how the right housing – in the right location at the right time – can increase a person’s quality of life and independence, while reducing life-time care costs.
We will continue to encourage the replication and scale of our housing prototypes and work to ensure that young people with disability are finding their way into the new accessible housing that is coming online.
Abbotsford Housing and Support Demonstration Project
Our first demonstration project was completed in 2013 in Abbotsford, in the inner-eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

In 2017, we decided that the replication and scaling of our housing demonstration projects would be best implemented by a dedicated organisation that focuses on the ‘bricks and mortar’ of housing projects. So we established Summer Housing, a not-for-profit sister organisation to the Summer Foundation. Summer Housing will be separate to the Summer Foundation, with an independent Board and staff, but the two organisations will continue to collaborate on areas of common interest.
