Finding housing

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is providing new opportunities for people to have more choice about where and how they want to live, but the road to independent living is not easy.

For many people who have had so little choice for so long it can be a daunting task navigating the NDIS to get where they want to be.

Getting started

The Summer Foundation’s My Housing Preferences tool can help start the process. The tool helps you think about where you want to live, who you would like to live with and the type of housing that you would like to live in. It can help you tell your housing story and work out your housing goals.

Funding support

The NDIS can provide capacity building funding for participants who need support to search for suitable housing. If you’re not happy with where you live, it’s important that you talk about this at your NDIS planning meeting and ensure that searching for suitable housing is one of your goals stated in your NDIS plan. For more, see our Looking for Somewhere to Live guide.

The NDIS does not own or operate any housing, but it may give capacity building funding to people with disability to help them find housing that supports their independence. The NDIS can also fund home modifications.

For people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs, the NDIS may fund Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) payments. For more, see our SDA Payments Guide and The Pathway to SDA roadmap.

The Housing Hub

Deciding you want to move is one thing, finding housing that meets your needs is another.

The Housing Hub is a website the Summer Foundation launched in August 2017 to connect people with disability to suitable housing vacancies. From humble beginnings as a government funded pilot project, the site has grown to now list vacancies from housing providers (including developers of Specialist Disability Accommodation) in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and the ACT.

The hub is also resource rich with toolkits, guides and links to other sites with useful information for NDIS participants.
