The Summer Foundation is pleased to present the annual Allen Martin Memorial Lecture for 2016.

This year Professor Jacinta Douglas, Summer Foundation’s Chair of Living Well with Acquired Brain Injury at La Trobe University, will discuss “Maximising community connection after brain injury: a multi-component program“. The recipient of the 2016 Allen Martin Research Scholarship will be announced at the event.

About the Lecture:

“So that’s the way it is for me — always being left out,” – Chris, 24 years old, over four years after sustaining a severe brain injury. Feeling socially isolated or excluded is a frequent and enduring problem for many people who survive severe brain injury. In fact for as many as one in every two survivors, life after brain injury is likely to be characterised by declining interpersonal relationships, increasing social isolation and ongoing depression.

The focus of this year’s Allen Martin Lecture is the power of relationships and community belonging in making a difference to the lives of people with severe brain injury. Jacinta will describe a new multi-component community connection program (M-ComConnect) that is currently being trialled. The program is derived from evidence in the literature that has identified effective principles, strategies and practices to enhance community inclusion outcomes for people with brain injury.
