We’ve written a useful guide to help you navigate your way through the search for mainstream housing. “Mainstream Housing Options” is written specifically for people with disability and is part of a series of guides that we put together to help people with disability find suitable housing.

RAPID HOUSING PROJECT

When someone with complex support needs is ready to leave hospital, a lack of suitable housing often results in them having to stay for longer periods of time in hospital or rehabilitation or they are forced to move to aged care. While this option may be seen as a temporary solution, often people remain there for many months, or end up staying permanently.

Our Get Building SDA initiative has been launched in regional NSW.

Get Building SDA aims to increase the number of SDA properties for NDIS participants and, as a result, increase the hours of Supported Independent Living (SIL) delivered in NSW.

After many months of waiting we have finally released our second report card into how the NDIS rollout is tracking.

Our last report card was in April 2017 so our latest results have been long-awaited, with much of the hold up related to difficulty in sourcing the data we need.

Five years into the NDIS, the results are mixed. The good news is that since the rollout started, there has been a reduction in the number of younger people entering aged care, however the reduction is still small at just 5 per cent.

The Summer Foundation has been working on a number of resources that explain residential aged care fee costs and how these are reflected in NDIS plans.

These resources are for people with disability, their families and key supporters, support coordinators and plan managers and aim to provide clarity about what is covered in the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The resources are in the final stages of development. We aim to have them available by the end of June and they will be accompanied by information webinars about aged care fees under the NDIS.

There has been quite a lot of concern expressed lately about getting SDA into NDIS plans. SDA funding allows people to live more independently. However, so far most of that funding has been allocated to people living in group homes (CRUs SSAs etc), previously funded through the State and Territory disability systems. Getting SDA in plans for newly built places, such as the apartments Summer Foundation has been involved in creating, is proving to be much harder.

The tenants we have been supporting in our Abbotsford housing project in inner Melbourne both now have SDA included in their plans. We are now supporting others who are hoping to move into new housing developments, so that they too get the chance to live as independently as possible. It is proving to be very time consuming, and frustrating, but we hope there will be good outcomes soon.

Our very own Dr George Taleporos will be returning with a second podcast series in coming weeks, following on from the success of Series 1.

George’s podcast series, Reasonable & Necessary – Making Sense of the NDIS, will feature a further five episodes aimed at providing listeners with useful information about navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Plans for Series 2 include discussions with the Honourable Jenny Macklin reflecting on five years of the NDIS, with Sam Paior all about support coordination, our own Cath Buccolo will talk about the NDIS and Health interface and Graeme Head will talk about building quality in NDIS services.
Follow us on Facebook or Twitter for news on when each episode will be available.

The NDIS will provide funding for specialist disability accommodation (SDA) to around 6% of participants. Check out our NDIS Housing resources to see how this works.

KPMG is undertaking a Review into the SDA Framework. Last month we spoke to SDA providers, participants and their support coordinators to understand their views before making our submission highlighting five problems and solutions:
